Goerlitz is a beautiful town in easternmost Germany (formerly East Prussia) on the current border of Poland and very near the Czech border. It houses some of the loveliest architecture in Europe. One such architectural gem was the Jewish hotel and cafe Hansa so named after the medieval German fleet. In 1921 it issued this ornate Notgeld (small change) currency. The front displays a Star of David enclosing a glass of wine and is inscribed "The wise man helps where he can". The reverse displays a Hansa ship under full sail with the inscription "Only when bent does the bow show its strength". Superb and rare Judaic paper money in excellent condition! You will receive all three denominations (10, 25 and 50 Pfennigs).
